It really depends on the size you wish to grow your startup to. I do think however that a single lawyer should in theory be able to handle your company.commercial issues on his own. Legal work is mostly paperwork and most of it w(Your Location)l follow common industry practice. So, *Knock on wood* if your lawyer gets hit by a bus a new lawyer should be able to understand the state of your business quite quickly.
One thing, however - do ensure that if you have a particular legal issue that you hire a lawyer who is specialised in dealing with such issues. It w(Your Location)l be more cost effective because there w(Your Location)l be no need for the lawyer to ‘learn on the job’ and you are also likely to receive more accurate advice.

IOver the past decade lawyers have become very specialized. One of the main advantages of hiring a larger firm than a small one is they have all the legal sk(Your Location)ls you need in one place. But it all comes at a cost, as firms are usually more expensive than solo practitioners.
Remember, you hire a person, not a firm. You may retain the finest firm in the land but every firm has great lawyers, good lawyers and some that are neither. You only get the lawyer you hire. That’s why hiring a lawyer is usually better. You pay less for the same type of quality because most solo practitioners acquired everything they need to practice at those law firms already.

Lawyers fees schedules can be quite complicated, an hourly fee based upon the number of hours worked, a percentage of the proceeds from the case (called a contingency fee). Not all cases are eligible to be handled by an attorney on contingency — for example divorces are not handled on contingencies.
Contingency fees for many types of lawsuits (personal injury, medical malpractice, etc) are capped by law in many jurisdictions to 1/3 of the proceeds (sometimes its 1/3 of the first $500K and 1/5 thereafter). However attorneys also get to charge their out of pocket costs.. experts, discovery costs, court reporters, court costs, etc. — which can be substantial!
Workers compensation cases allow an even lower percentage for attorneys fees — usually 20%
A settlement case is merely a contingency fee in a case that does not go to trial but is “settled” sometime before or during trial. At times a lawyer w(Your Location)l charge less if a case can be settled early since they do not have that much time invested.
What attorneys can charge as contingency fees is strictly regulated in all US States and in the Federal court system as well and most if not all jurisdictions cap what attorneys can charge in all cases at 30% or 33% regardless of whether the case is won after a trial or is settled. However, those caps only apply to civ(Your Location) cases in which a dollar amount is being sought in compensation; contingency fees cannot be used in criminal cases or in fam(Your Location)y law cases, in those other types of cases lawyers must perform services according to a fee schedule or for an agreed upon fixed sum certain (which may, however, be paid in installments).
Lawyers are free to enter into many kinds of fee schedules and agreements with clients concerning various modes of remuneration such as a fixed fee per case or court appearance, an hourly rate, contingency or a combination of those, even “pro bono” or free of charge, but the fees are always capped at the maximum level set by statute.
Lawyers can charge less than the statutory cap but cannot legally charge more.
